Benjamin Chowk Redesign

Civic Monument · Bihar · 2026

Benjamin Chowk is envisioned as a compact civic landmark that combines public memory, local identity, and contemporary urban design. The proposal transforms the traffic island into a distinctive public monument while maintaining a restrained footprint suitable for its urban setting..

The design integrates four commemorative faces dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and Nemdhari Babu. Each face is composed as part of a unified architectural form, creating a monument that can be appreciated from multiple directions around the chowk.

Design Approach

The monument is developed as a vertically proportioned civic marker with a landscaped base, framed commemorative panels, and a strong central crown. The composition balances visibility, proportion, durability, and visual identity while responding to the limited scale of the traffic island.

The four-sided configuration gives equal visual importance to each approach road, allowing the monument to function as a recognizable urban reference point within Khagaria.

Materials & Detailing

The monument uses an RCC and brickwork structural system with sandstones finishes to provide durability and a refined civic character. The base is integrated with a landscaped edge to soften the monument and improve its visual relationship with the surrounding road environment.

Urban Identity

The design aims to create more than a traffic landmark. Through the integration of commemorative figures, municipal identity, architectural detailing, and landscape elements, Benjamin Chowk is conceived as a recognizable civic marker for Khagaria.
